What is Theory and General Principles about?

This chapter details some of the more important principles and basic science of marine diesel engine working and operation. It explains how much of the thermal energy contained in fuels can be usefully transformed into work or propulsive power. The Sankey diagram used in the chapter is illustrative of efficiency loss but most modern engines have improved significantly on the useful power and the best are now just over 50% with potential to increase using waste heat recovery. Also covered are the differing principles of four-stroke and two-stroke engines. There are explanations of and basic formulae used to describe the main terms referenced in marine engine design and operation including torque, vibration, damping, etc. A section of the chapter is devoted to the regulations for controlling vibration and noise in engine rooms that apply to ships under the ILO Conventions.
