Differential sticking occurs when the pressure exerted by the drilling mud is significantly higher than the formation pressure, pushing the drill pipe against the wellbore wall. If the pressure difference is large enough over a large surface area of the pipe, it can become stuck. The force holding the pipe can be calculated based on the pressure difference, the area of contact between the pipe and filter cake, and the coefficient of friction.
