What is CpG island methylator phenotype is an independent predictor of survival benefit from 5-fluorouracil in stage III colorectal cancer: a new trick for an old dog about?
Expression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) detected by immunohistochemestry is observed in 60-75% of colorectal carcinoma and is associated with poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of EGFR expression in a group of patients with locally advanced rectal cancer treated with preoperative radiotherapy with/without chemotherapy and radical surgery. Materials/Methods: One hundred three patients with locally advanced rectal cancer were enrolled in this study. Treatment consisted on preoperative pelvic radiotherapy (total dose 45-50 Gy) and, in 63 patients, concomitant 5FU-Leucovorin chemotherapy. Surgical resection was performed 4-8 weeks later, in all patients. Mean age was 64 years (range: 34-92 years). There were 73 males (71%) and all patients had a IK Ͼ 80%. Clinical stage was: T2, 5 patients; T3, 83 patients; T4, 15 patients; N0, 62 patients and N1-2, 41 patients. Inmunohistochemistry for EGFR was determined at the preradiation diagnostic biopsy and in the resected specimens. Inmunostaining was performed by EGFR monoclonal antibody (Biogenex, MU 207-UC). Inmunohistochemical analysis was evaluated according to extension and staining i
