About this document

Active vs Passive Transport Overview by Kyle Peñarroyo is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Transport across cell membranes can occur through passive or active transport. Passive transport involves simple diffusion, osmosis, or facilitated diffusion and moves molecules down their concentration gradient without cell energy expenditure. Active transport moves molecules against their concentration gradient and requires ATP. Specific membrane proteins like channel and carrier proteins facilitate the transport of molecules like ions, water, and glucose across the selectively permeable lipid bilayer.
