What is Autism Spectrum and Intellectual Disability about?
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects social development, communication, and behavior (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2022). ASD is typically diagnosed using clinical criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (APA, 2022) that also includes an indication of the severity of impairment. Specifically, a child must have persistent deficits in socialemotional reciprocity and nonverbal communication. They also must demonstrate deficits with developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships. The severity of these impairments can range from relatively mild (e.g., average IQ but stilted conversations, flat affect, limited social initiations) to severe (e.g., very low IQ with absent speech and high rates of repetitive behavior and self-stimulation). Accordingly, some individuals who have mild impairments have average to above average intelligence and use speech and language to communicate but experience social difficulties that negatively impact quality of life throughout adulthood.
