What is The Changing Role of Renal Mass Biopsy about?

Renal mass Biopsy Kidney cancer KEY POINTS Renal mass biopsy (RMB) is a safe and effective diagnostic procedure with the rate of complications including hematoma, macroscopic hematuria, and clinically significant pain at only 4.9%, 1.0%, and 1.2%, respectively. RMB has a sensitivity of 96.7%, specificity of 94.4%, and a positive predictive value (PPV) of 98.8% making it a reliable diagnostic test. RMB has a nondiagnostic rate of approximately 14%, which can be improved with repeat biopsy or a multidisciplinary approach including urologist-, interventional radiologist-, and gastroenterologistdirected biopsy techniques. Histologic grade concordance for RMB is approximately 62% and remains a limitation of RMB. RMB is an effective risk stratification tool and can increase the number of patients undergoing active surveillance and reduce the risk of benign pathology after surgical extirpation.
