What is Thanksgiving Day: History and Dates about?

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in the United States and Canada to give thanks for the harvest. In the US it is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, while in Canada it is on the second Monday of October. The tradition has roots in religious celebrations in England and among the pilgrims and puritans in New England, though the date was not fixed until Abraham Lincoln declared it a national holiday in 1863 to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November.
