A generator converts kinetic energy from a spinning turbine into electrical energy. Large hydroelectric dams use generators powered by water from the dam turning turbines. The Grand Coulee Dam has 40-foot diameter pipes carrying water to spin the turbines and generators, each producing 600 megawatts of power, enough to power over a million toasters. Power is transmitted across high voltage transmission lines in a power grid to be distributed to homes and businesses.
