Ladders are designed to provide permanent access safely even in difficult environments. Safety cages or fall arresters are used to protect users from falls. Requirements for ladders include rungs spaced 225-300mm, landing platforms if the gap to a surface exceeds 75mm, and clearances of at least 650mm in front and 200mm behind rungs.
