What is Risk assessment for aerosol infection by SARS-CoV-2 and protection by respirators and surgical masks about?
## Background With the COVID 19 outbreak, different speculations were raised concerning routes of infection by the emerging SARS-CoV-2. At first the health authorities around the world declared that infection may be due to droplets emitted by coughing, talking, singing, or sneezing, which will settle upon mucus membranes of the nose, mouth, and eyes. The distance of dispersal from these routes was estimated to be up to 1.8 m, and hence the 2 m "safe" social distancing between people. In addition, public health services announced that infection may occur by touching contaminated surfaces and carrying the virus to mucus membranes. Indeed, the virus can survive on surfaces for hours to days, depending on climate conditions and the surface itself, and in theory infection can be achieved, but this route is not the main one. As for infections by inhaling microdroplet aerosols, the health authorities tended to down play its importance, and some even negated it completely for some reasons. Infection by microdroplets aerosols was proved in many infectious diseases, like influenza, measles, meningitis, brucellosis, anthrax to name a few, and most of the biological agents listed as potential
