The relative density is defined as the ratio of the difference between the void ratio of a soil in its loosest and natural states to the difference between its void ratios in the loosest and densest states. The test involves measuring the minimum, maximum and natural densities of a soil sample. The minimum density is found by pouring the soil into a calibrated mould in the loosest state.
