This thesis investigates methods for determining fumonisins in maize using HPLC with fluorescence and UV detection. Different derivatization reagents and sample clean-up methods are compared. Naturally contaminated maize samples from subsistence farmers in South Africa are analyzed. The results show that UV detection can be used as an alternative to fluorescence detection for fumonisin analysis in maize, regardless of the derivatization reagent or clean-up method used.
