What is Controversial Nutrition Policy Issues about?

Abstract: Twenty articles analyzing current, diverse international issues in public health nutrition are organized into 3 general sections. The first of these addresses food and nutrition episodes in developing nations (Brazil, India, China, Chile, the Sahel, and Kalahari San). The second section discusses several regulatory problems (the issue of saccharin; maternal-fetal transfer of polychlorinated biphenyls; opinion vs. evidence in setting the RDAs for pyridoxine; and the establishment of US dietary goals). The last section presents 6 articles dealing with associations of nutrition with disease (cholesterol and dietary prevention of heart disease; megadose vitamin C therapy; infant formulas vs. breastfeeding; birth weight and nutritional supplementation; the role of iron nutrition in infections; aspects of nutrition and health factors in tolerable parasitosis; and intervention in alcohol consumption by the US Indian). Each of the articles attempts to: consider the appropriate relative determinants; synthesize the pertinent information; and arrive at specific conclusions. (wz)
