This study analyzed 925 young South African infants under 60 days who presented at a hospital with illnesses. The most common illnesses requiring urgent hospital care were hyperbilirubinemia and sepsis in infants under 7 days, pneumonia, sepsis and hyperbilirubinemia in infants 7-27 days, and pneumonia and sepsis in infants 28-59 days.
