What is Understanding Tongue Taste Mechanisms about?
The three nerves associated with taste are the facial nerve (CN VII), glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX), and vagus nerve (CN X). These nerves send impulses from taste buds on the tongue to the solitary nucleus in the medulla. Impulses then travel to the thalamus and gustatory cortex. The tongue has numerous papillae containing taste buds that allow it to sense five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.
