William the Conqueror led an army of Norman, Breton, and French soldiers in the 11th century invasion of England. His claim to the English throne came through his relationship to the previous childless Anglo-Saxon King Edward the Confessor. Edward died in 1066 and was succeeded by Harold Godwinson, who William defeated at the Battle of Hastings.
