Unduvap Poya is the last full moon day of the Sinhala Buddhist calendar. This year it falls on December 20th. 2552 years ago on an Unduvap Poya day, Sangamitta Theri brought a sacred Bodhi sapling from India that was planted in Anuradhapura and helped establish Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Sangamitta Theri also helped establish the order for Buddhist nuns after being invited by King Devanampiyatissa. Unduvap Poya marks an important event in spreading Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
