What is A Chitosan Zinc-Oxide Nano-adsorbent Coated with Sand Filter Bed: Characterization and Efficiency Evaluation for Treating Milk Processing Industry Wastewater about?
This study aimed to create a breakthrough environmentally friendly technology that is scalable, stable, and efficient in the commercial treatment of wastewater from the milk processing industry. In this study, chitosan zinc oxide nano-adsorbent (CZnO) of 88.35 ± 2.89 d.nm size was synthesized and then CZnO coated with sand (CSZOCS) filter bed was developed. Characterization of CSZOCS was done by considering its adsorption properties as well as its surface morphology, crystallinity, and functional groups. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to optimize the process parameters such as CZnO coating dosage, contact time, pH, initial concentration of biological oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The percent removal efficiency (%RE) was studied by treating simulated and real milk processing industry wastewater (MPIW). The %RE of organic pollutants was found to increase with the increase in contact time and coating dosage of CZnO. Adsorption was observed to be rapid and occurred within 140 min with different coating dosages. The %RE of BOD and COD increased with the increase in pH, and the optimum pH for the adsorption of both pollutants was 6. The equilibrium c
