The Satavahanas ruled in central India and the Deccan after the fall of the Mauryan Empire around 100 BCE. They originated as a Deccan tribe but claimed Brahmin status. They competed with the Shaka tribes for control of the region. Their greatest king, Gautamiputra Satakarni, defeated the Shakas and expanded the empire.
