What is Oxidative Stress Toxicity Effect of Potential Metal Nanoparticles on Human Cells about?
Cosmetics, packaging, automotive, and textiles nanoparticles (NPs) have invaded our daily lives. While global production of nanomaterials grows continuously, little is known about their effects on health. The use of metal nanoparticles in industrial applications has been expanding, and as a consequence, the risk of human exposure increases. In this sense, this work is focused on a review of the published reports related to potential toxic effects of commercial NPs on different human cells. Besides, in vitro toxicological studies of NPs on human cells were performed. From the analysis of the scientific literature, many conclusions can be derived. Thus, in vitro studies suggest that NPs, in general, induce cytotoxicity with different underlying mechanisms such as oxidative stress and genotoxicity, in which NPs are released as ions. Published literature indicates the potential toxicity of NPs to cells and suggests caution.
