What is Growth of fibrous YIG single crystals by the self-adjusting solvent FZ method about?
## Fibrous yttrium iron garnet (YIG : Y Fe O ) single crystals (0.3-1.0 mm in diameter) were successfully grown from a stoichiometric feed rod by a simple floating zone method with YAG laser heating, despite of an incongruently melting substance. This growth mechanism has been confirmed to be due to a self-adjusting reaction in which a solvent with proper ingredient builds up within the molten zone itself immediately after the seed touch, by analyzing compositions of a seed touch portion and quenched molten zone. Based on this growth mechanism we have developed a new growth technique, named as the self-adjusting solvent floating zone (SSFZ) method, by which we can grow high-quality fibrous YIG single crystals along the [1 0 0], [1 1 0] and [1 1 1] crystallographic directions of the seed crystals. A ferromagnetic resonance linewidth of the fibrous YIG single crystal was about 96 A/m (1.2 Oe).
