High current flow through a thin fuse wire will cause it to melt and break the circuit before damaging other parts. Cartridge fuses contain silver wire enclosed in a quartz powder filled ceramic tube with metal end caps, which helps extinguish arcs when the fuse blows. Cartridge fuses can be used for very high fault levels and have accurate time/current characteristics and reliability for discrimination between circuits.
