In New Jersey, overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death. Over 700 people died from drug overdoses in New Jersey in 2009 alone, with opioids involved in over 75% of deaths. The counties with the highest numbers of overdose deaths were Camden, Essex, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean. The majority of overdose deaths involved opioids like heroin, prescription opioids, or combinations of drugs.
