Thermophilic bacteria were isolated from water samples taken from a borehole drilled to a depth of 6,779 meters in granitic rock in central Sweden. Only samples from 3,500 meters yielded growth of thermophilic, anaerobic, fermentative bacteria in enrichment cultures. Pure cultures were obtained from glucose, starch, xylan, ethanol, and lactate substrates.
