What is Randomized trial on two types of thermoplastic masks for patient immobilization during radiation therapy for head-and-neck cancer: In regard to Sharp et al. (Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 2005;61:250–256) about?
To The Editor: We read with great interest the article by Zhu et al. (1). In their retrospective study, they found that only disease stage and extent of resection affected the prognosis of invasive thymoma patients. No correlation between different histological subtypes and prognosis was found. This finding might be partially explained by the Muller-Hermelink histopathologic classification system used in this study. On the contrary two large-scale retrospective studies (2, 3) in thymoma patients, adopting the World Health Organization classification proposed in 1999 (4), demonstrated the importance of histological subtypes as useful prognostic indicators. New insights in the biology of the disease come from recently published data. Henley et al. (5) evaluated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) in 37 invasive thymomas. Positive staining of tumor was observed in 28 tumors (23 invasive and/or metastatic thymomas, two thymic carcinomas, and three non-invasive thymomas). In their subsequent analysis with 35 patients for c-KIT expression (6), they found that c-KIT is expressed more commonly in thymic carcinomas (73% of carcinomas) than in thymoma (5% of thymomas). They conclude that
