About this document

Understanding Shintoism: Beliefs & Practices by Ashley Landero is a document available to read on EtoBox.

Shintoism is the ancient religion of Japan that focuses on ritual practices connecting present-day Japan to its past. It originated at least as early as 1000 BC but was first codified in the 8th century. Shintoists believe spiritual powers exist in nature, represented by spirits called kami that live in natural places and objects. Major gods include Izanagi and Izanami, the creators, and Amaterasu, the sun goddess. Shinto is practiced at shrines in beautiful natural settings through rituals of purification
