This study piloted the use of virtual reality as a distraction for children undergoing painful medical procedures for cancer treatment. Children were randomly assigned to use VR distraction, non-VR distraction, or no distraction during a port access procedure. Results found that those using VR distraction reported less pain and had lower pulse rates, suggesting VR may be an effective coping strategy to reduce distress during medical procedures.
