Spits are narrow sand and shingle ridges that jut out from coastlines into shallow, sheltered water. They form when there is a change in the direction of the coastline. Spits are created through longshore drift transporting material along the coastline, with deposition building up the spit from largest to smallest particles over time as the spit grows outward.
