A pseudo two-dimensional macro-homogeneous model has been used to understand the high-rate capability of LiFePO4. The circumstances that can facilitate the fast and ultra-fast rate behavior of this material are identified and discussed in detail. For the electrode designs used in the studies, it was found that the solid-phase mass transport rate has a significant effect on the rate capability of LiFePO4. The size distribution of the LiFePO4 particles has an effect on the high rate charge and discharge behavior of the material. These and other consequences are discussed using experimental data and model predictions.
