The lipid pattern of D a u c u s carota L. suspension culture cells and other plant cell strains was analyzed. Phosphatidylcholine, p h o s p h a t i d y l e t h a n o lamine, phosphatidylinositol, and triacylglycerol were the m a i n c o m p o n e n t s . The characteristic plastidal and m i t o c h o n d r i a l lipids could also be identified. All strains tested exhibited a p h o s p h o l i p a s e D activity. Several lipid precursors were found to be well utilized by the cells and to be special m a r k e r s for certain lipids or parts of the lipid molecules. The half life times of the m a j o r lipids ranged at a b o u t half a generation time of the cells.
