In Chaps. 2 and 3, I reviewed several lines of evidence, which indicates that same-sex attractions have a genetic, as well as an environmental basis. Accordingly, evolutionary theorists need to explain why a small but significant proportion of the population experiences same-sex attractions, which have both a genetic and an environmental basis. In the current chapter, I will review some of the evolutionary theories, and I will attempt to assess their adequacy in doing so. The theories that I will review, argued that same-sex attraction has benefits, which balance the reproductive costs. Therefore, before I move on to discuss the benefits that these theories predict, I will examine first the evidence about these costs for different types of same-sex attraction. The Fitness Cost of Same-Sex Attraction The presence of same-sex attraction in high prevalence is evolutionary puzzling, as it appears to have a considerable reproductive cost without any apparent reproductive or survival benefits.
