There are two types of passive sentences in Japanese: direct and indirect. Direct passives function similarly to English passives, where the direct object of an active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. Indirect passives do not have an English equivalent. They describe an event involving an action by someone (Y) that affects another person (Z), where (Z) has no control over the event but may be negatively or positively impacted.
