What is Oncologic Safety of Adipose-derived Stem Cell Application about?
Fat grafting is a commonly used method in postmastectomy breast reconstruction for the treatment of contour irregularities and volume deficits. The procedure is relatively short, safe, can be performed in an outpatient setting, and has high patient satisfaction [1]. The discovery of ASCs and their regenerative potential has sparked further interest in this procedure [2, 3]. ASCs are particularly attractive for breast reconstruction as they prevent resorption of the fat grafts, preferentially differentiate into adipocytes, and help with tissue repair of injury due to radiation treatment [4,5]. Overall, there is interest in using autologous tissue over implants, owing to inherent risks of prosthetic reconstruction. However, the oncological safety of fat grafting for postmastectomy breast reconstruction has been controversial [6][7][8]. This controversy stems from studies that documented stimulatory effects of ASCs on breast cancer cells in both in vitro and in vivo animal experiments [6,[9][10][11]. However, clinical studies did not show an increased oncologic risk after postmastectomy fat grafting [12]. ## Interaction of adipose-derived stem cells and breast cancer at a cellular lev
