What is PALAR: Participatory Action Learning and Action Research for Community Engagement about?
this chapter provides a rationale for participatory action Learning and action Research (PaLaR) as my preferred approach for achieving sustainable social change in communities with complex needs. Findings from PaLaR projects continue to show how learning and action, when embedded within a participatory action research paradigm, lead to co-creation of knowledge and practical outcomes that are beneficial for communities. at the same time, use of PaLaR in community contexts enables universities to advance an engaged scholarship agenda that contributes to a common good. in this chapter, i illustrate how a PaLaR approach has been applied in community-university partnerships in the context of a developing country, South africa. in sharing these examples, i demonstrate key features of PaLaR, which both align with and distinguish it from other genres of action research. i discuss both the benefits and challenges of implementing a PaLaR approach.
