What is Interpreting space: Gis and archaeology. Kathleen M. S. Allen, Stanton W. Green, and Ezra B. W. Zubrow (Eds.), 1990, Taylor & Francis, xiv + 398 pp., $79.00 (clothbound) about?

Certainly almost all archaeologists have heard about Geographic Information Systems (abbreviated GIs, as it will be here) technology and about the great advantages that it offers archaeologists. Many archaeologists will want to use it because it's something "new," and many others will resist it as something that the techno-enthusiasts simply want to do because it is available, or because it offers a new way of using data which obscures its limitations under the guise of a novel technology. Interpreting Space introduces GIS to archaeologists as a new way of looking a t things, instead of a new computer toy, and in doing so provides valid justification for all archaeologists to explore GIS techniques. This new way of seeing the world is through the agency of digital maps which are tied inextricably to nonmapped data, something which has never been available with map overlays, CAD maps, or topographic mapping programs. Neither is it attainable through the use of the many nonspatial database management software programs. GIS software technology links spatial and nonspatial data, in a coherent topological whole. Flexible and workable GIS software is expensive (compared with most softwar
