This study examined the association between cigarette smoking and Down syndrome. The study compared 100 mothers of children with Down syndrome to 100 mothers of children with other defects and 100 mothers of children without defects. All children were born in upstate New York in 1980-1981. The results found a negative association between cigarette smoking around the time of conception and Down syndrome, with risk ratios of 0.58 and 0.56.
