The letters of Junius made their appearance in the Public Advertiser between January 1769 and January 1772, exploiting the excitement aroused by the election of John Wilkes for the county of Middlesex. The mordant and anonymous attacks upon public figures, including the first minister and the King, delivered in tones of effortless affrontery, assured for them the widest publicity. They were reprinted in dozens of newspapers and journals and the collected editions, in due course, ran to more than a hundred. Scholars working on the eighteenth century have for some time expressed the need for a reliable edition of the letters, which represent a remarkable indication of the growing influence of the press in that period. The previous edition, published nearly fifty years ago, was severely handled by reviewers. In particular, by combining editorial comment with efforts to identify the author, it made the material unnecessarily difficult to use. It is a feature of the present edition that discussion of the authorship problem is separated from the main text and is treated in a final appendix, in which the editor has tried to present the evidence, some of it very recent, as dispassionately
