The testis has two main functions: spermatogenesis and steroidogenesis. Spermatogenesis, the production of sperm, occurs in the seminiferous tubules through mitosis, meiosis and spermiogenesis. This results in haploid sperm. Steroidogenesis, the production of hormones like testosterone, occurs in the Leydig cells of the interstitium. The hormones support spermatogenesis and have endocrine effects. Neuroendocrine signals like LH regulate testicular function and hormone release.
