Standard Oil Company was founded in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller and grew to become the largest oil refinery in the world through the late 19th century. It pioneered techniques of vertical integration and horizontal consolidation to dominate the emerging petroleum industry. Criticism of its monopoly power led to its dissolution by the Supreme Court in 1911 into over 30 companies. Rockefeller became the richest person in modern history through his leadership of Standard Oil.
