The Rivas project aims to reduce ground vibration caused by passing trains through identifying track parameter improvements. It is studying ways to reduce the excitation force at the wheel-rail contact point and reduce vibrations transmitted through the track. Two proposed mitigation methods are installing soft or very soft pads under heavy sleepers to decouple the track from the ground, and using very soft rail pads to shift wheel-rail force resonance to lower frequencies.
