What is Marriage and Women about?

In Anglo-Saxon England, women had more legal rights and independence than in later medieval periods. They could own land, leave marriages they disliked, and control their dowries. After the Norman Conquest, women had few legal protections and marriage became more about political alliances than affection. Women could not own property, their husbands controlled dowries, and families often chose husbands. The Church also sought to subjugate women and portray them as inferior to men based on the story of Eve.
