Purpose/Objective: To estimate overall survival duration and time to relapse in patients treated with preoperative radiotherapy and continuous infusion 5-fluorouracil (5FU) for locally advanced adenocarcinoma of rectum in Australian and New Zealand centers. Materials/Methods: The trial was a multi-center phase II trial conducted by the Trans-Tasman Radiation Oncology Group (TROG9801). Eligible patients were those with newly diagnosed localised adenocarcinoma of rectum, within 12 cm of the anal verge, staged T3-4 and deemed suitable for curative resection. Radiotherapy (50.4 Gy in 28 fractions in a five and a half-week period) was given with continuous infusion 5FU. The treating centers had the options of using either 96 hours /week infusion (Monday to Friday) at 300 mg/m 2 /day or 7 days/week infusion at 225 mg/m 2 /day throughout the course of radiotherapy. A closeout date of October 1, 2002, was chosen: all follow-up after this date has been ignored in this analysis. Results: A total of 82 patients was accrued between March 1998 and March 1999. The median follow-up time was 4.0 years (range 2.3 to 4.5 years); one patient was lost to follow-up, after 2.3 years. There were 55 males
