American colonization of the Philippines began in 1901 when General Emilio Aguinaldo surrendered to American forces. During this period of colonization, Filipino writers continued expressing their nationalism and love of country through various forms of literature like newspapers, poems, stories, plays, essays and novels. Some notable Filipino writers during this time included Maximo Maguiat, who was an editor, and Faustino Aguilar, who was one of the first Filipino novelists to explore social realism. Paz
