Ben Jonson was an English poet, essayist, and playwright born in 1572 in London. He came from humble beginnings, as his father died before his birth and his mother remarried a bricklayer. Jonson was educated at Westminster School and worked briefly as a bricklayer and soldier before becoming an actor and playwright. In 1594 he married Anne Lewis and began working full-time as a playwright, producing his first great play Every Man in His Humor in 1598. Jonson killed a man in a duel in 1598 and was imprisoned
