Directionally solidi"ed composites of the pseudobinary system ZrO }Fe O were grown by the #oating zone method at solidi"cation rates from 2.5 to 40 mm/h in an air atmosphere. The composite had a "brous microstructure which contained ZrO "bers in a magnetite matrix. Monoclinic ZrO "bers were obtained by dissolving the matrix in a concentrated hydrochloric acid. The diameters of the "bers were about 0.5}2 m, and their lengths were up to 100 m.
