Herbert Marcuse (1898-1979) was a prominent German-American philosopher and sociologist. He was a member of the Frankfurt School and helped popularize critical theory. Marcuse fled Nazi Germany in 1933 and emigrated to the United States. He worked for the U.S. government during World War II but later became known as "the father of the New Left" for his critiques of capitalist society. Marcuse was heavily influential in social and political movements of the 1960s.
