In September 1933, over 18,000 cotton pickers associated with the Cannery and Agricultural Workers Industrial Union (CAWIU) went on strike. The strike marked the culmination of a wave of thirty-seven agricultural strikes in California that affected 65 percent of the state's crops. Seventy-five to ninety-five percent of the cotton strikers were Mexicans. 1 The strike extended over one hundred miles and four counties, spreading from the southern tip of the San Joaquin Valley in Kern County north into Tulare, Fresno, and Kings counties. It lasted twentyseven days and was the largest, longest, and most bitter agricultural conflict to that date. Three Mexicans were killed. And ultimately the Mexican, the Californian, and the federal governments became involved in its resolution. The cotton strike was a social earthquake.
