What is Chapter 37 “Therapy” with Dr. Emma about?
The day we spent shadowing Dr. Emma, we asked if we could sit in on her treatment or therapy sessions, and she agreed.There are two small "treatment" rooms outside of the DTU pod. They look like small offices, except instead of desks the rooms are outfitted with cages, the same kinds of cages where we interviewed Scholar. The first room holds three cages; the second holds five, two cages on one side of the room and three on the other. Dr. Emma holds treatment at the scheduled time, 10 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, five men (each in a cage) in one room and three in the other, also in cages. Dr. Emma moves in between the two rooms, offering ten minutes of treatment to the first group, then switching rooms and back and forth, alternating for the hour.Dr. Emma told us during our interview that she gets to select the topics that she wants to cover in their treatment. For this par tic u lar day she has chosen resilience. In the first room there was one white man, one Black man, and one Hispanic man, who we're not sure actually spoke that much En glish. We interacted with this him on several more occasions, and his En glish was definitely limited. We're not sure how the
