What is Asynchronous Telehealth about?
## INTRODUCTION/HISTORY Although traditional health care is nearly always delivered in a synchronous format, telehealth delivery can be either synchronous or asynchronous. All forms of synchronous medical care, from a patient perspective, involve traveling to a medical facility or logging onto a technological platform, sitting in a waiting room (brick and mortar or virtual), and receiving care from a physician or advanced-practice clinician in an "examination room." This model of care requires coordination of the schedules for both the patient and clinician and ready availability of either technology or a facility that is both equipped and staffed. Many potential constraints to synchronous medical care occur, and consequently, patients sometimes cancel, reschedule, or do not come for care at the recommended interval (Table 1).
