There has never been a comprehensive description of English in Cameroon -in stark contrast to the wealth of research devoted to neighboring Nigeria. The absence of a full description has certainly to do with the state of information: the demographic facts and sociolinguistic data about both the local St E and widespread pidgin are just not available. The scholar who might have been best qualified for the job, Loreto Todd, compiled and annotated an excellent collection of texts (Todd 1982), but that was not intended to fill the greater gap. Therefore, we could not agree more with Wolf that a comprehensive monograph is an urgent desideratum; a newly founded research program in Berlin gave him the opportunity to fill this gap. The book has a short description of aims and methods (pp. 1-27), where the degree of vagueness makes the reader aware of problems to come. A look at the linguistic situation and the role of English in other West African countries follows -this is a necessary chapter since the early history of Cameroon cannot be seen in isolation, and experience and findings from betterresearched varieties can provide useful hints for relevant questions and suggest solutions.
